English — reviewed facts

Wang Sha was fourteen years old, a second-year junior middle school student at Huaiyuan Town Middle School in Chongqing.

One year of school cost seven hundred yuan. Her family's annual income was one thousand yuan.

That income came from her father digging sand from the riverbed and selling it.

Beside the road, a small pigsty worth about fifty yuan was destroyed, and her mother was beaten until her nose bled.

This photograph later became the founding-issue cover story of China Poverty Alleviation, under the headline, Can I still go to school next year?

These are archival facts, not quotations from Wang Sha. The Chinese text is a reading aid and is not presented as her oral testimony.
